SGL’s personnel consist of 172 persons in total, in various positions (permanent, temporary and on contract). Out of the 106 scientists (Chemists/Biologists/Microbiologists), 54 are in permanent positions and 50 are employed on a temporary basis - 79% of the scientists are holders of at least one postgraduate degree. Twelve (12) employees belong to interchangeable personnel, and 21 employees are hourly paid.
A number of scientists and service providers are employed on contract for the completion of research projects (including Transition Facility programme).
The present structure of the SGL comprises 19 specialised Laboratories (see Organizational Chart). The Organizational Chart also includes several Units, such as IT Unit, Quality Assurance Unit, Cooperation with EFSA and Risk Assessment Unit, Research/Funded Projects Unit, and European / International Issues, International Cooperation & Communication Unit.
Other groups/committees are also in place, for the effective and efficient operation of the SGL: Security Committee, Core Learning Group, Communication Group, Common Assessment Framework (CAF) Group, Crisis Management Group, Environmental Management System Commitee (EMAS), Procurement Committee, Event-Organizing Committee.
Continuous efforts are made for the re-organisation, rational development of the organisation structure and the employment of permanent scientific staff to fulfill the requirements of the accreditation standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and the EU.
