Attitudes and Behaviour Regarding AIDS
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH
Completion of the Study on the Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour
Regarding AIDS, Sex and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Among the Adult Population of the Limassol Town and Rural Areas, Cyprus 2000-2001

The study on the Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour Regarding AIDS, Sex and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Among the Adult Population of the Limassol Town and Rural Areas, which was funded by the Jacques Parisot prize that was awarded by the World Health Organization has been completed. Principal investigator of the study is Dr Laura Papantoniou, epidemiologist, who collaborated with Dr Christodoulos Kaisis, internist/public health physician, Mrs Marina Payiatsou, sociologist, and Mr Antonis Antoniou, psychologist.

The aim of the study was to evaluate risk factors influencing the transmission of the AIDS virus and of other sexually transmitted diseases in Cyprus and apply this information in the revision of the policy and strategy of the National AIDS Programme.

The participation rate of persons meeting the inclusion criteria was 84%. We would like to thank the people of Limassol for the trust they have displayed towards us, leading to the achievement of this high rate.

This is a study of the household type, with a sample of 243 men and 262 women aged between 18 and 50, Cypriots and foreigners who are permanent residents of the Town and District of Limassol.

The level of knowledge was generally high, though certain areas of relative ignorance were recorded. The attitudes (beliefs) with regard to the factors which influence the transmission of the virus and to the acceptance of HIV-infected people were mainly positive, though certain negative attitudes or uncertainties were recorded concerning what is and what is not socially accepted. Further evaluation of these elements, as well as of elements recorded on people΄ s behaviour will contribute to the construction of a general picture about the social frame within which the AIDS epidemic in Cyprus is developing.

The extension of the study to all districts is planned, in order to collect data which are representative of all areas under the control of the State.
