Aims
The aim of the Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory (03) is to provide reliable analytical data in an impartial and objective way as well as expert witnessing to:
- Facilitate the administration of justice
- Support the law enforcement authorities towards combating crime, use and trafficking of narcotics
- Provide assistance to hospitals in cases of emergencies
For the accomplishment of these aims the laboratory provides:
- The means for more efficient approaches in police investigations, by multiple utilization of techniques and methodologies
- Information to the public in educational programmes for the prevention of use of narcotics
- Assistance to medical doctors in hospitals in cases regarding suicide attempts, poisoning and unnatural deaths
Scope
The basic scope of the relevant Laboratory (03) of the SGL covers the following fields of work:
- Analysis of illegal drugs, psychotropic substances, exhibits from arson cases, explosives and explosive residues, trace criminalistics (paint flake, fibres, glass, plastic materials, metals)
- Analysis of biological samples for alcohol, illegal drugs/psychotropic substances, drugs, pesticides, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and other poisons
- Cooperation with Forensic Laboratories in Europe and USA for exchange of analytical results especially in the field of narcotics and explosives for controlling their use and trafficking
Soon the lab will start gunshot residue analysis with the Electron Microscope which has been purchased
Examinations and Applied Research focus on:
- Prompt analytical/scientific support to the Judicial and Enforcement Authorities and Hospitals
- Support in international efforts for combating crime, drug trafficking and terrorism
