PESTICIDE RESIDUES (08)

Laboratory No.8
Lab of Pesticide Residues
Accredited according to ISO/IEC/EN 17025
Scope
  • Official Control, monitoring, surveillance and applied research towards early identification of existing and emerging problems for the protection of public health, the promotion of GMPs and the promotion of exports
  • Coordination of the multisectoral monitoring programs
  • Continuous harmonization of the relevant Pesticide Residues related Legislation
Activities

(a) Compliance control, Monitoring and Surveillance Programs

Programmes are designed to cover needs for early identification and prevention as well as for compliance control. The design is based on criteria such as: known problems and violations, the pattern of pesticide usage (both the good and the “actual” Agricultural Practice), information available from the EU Rapid Alert System, food consumption patterns and vulnerability of consumer groups e.g. children. The sampling regime is a combination of «at random» sampling and target oriented sampling on specific food-pesticide combinations.

The programmes cover samples of plant origin (mainly) and samples of animal origin (meat, milk, honey, fish etc). They are implemented in cooperation with the competent departments of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Tourism and the Ministry Agriculture, Natural resources and Environment

(b) Applied research
  • Target/problem oriented research aiming to identify emerging problems and to define future monitoring priorities for example survey on Potatoes
  • Special investigation studies on target foods, especially those consumed by children, with emphasis on potential oncogenic pesticides (e.g. strawberries, potatoes and grapes)
  • Method development and validation: Development of sensitive and wide spectrum multiresidues methods covering medium to low polarity pesticides in samples
(c) Participation in International Programmes:

The Laboratory submitted successful proposals and coordinated the following projects:
  • GEMS/Food-EURO/Cyprus: Research and Monitoring Project on the Environmental Contamination of Food (1995-1999)
  • UNCHR 1993- Project: Prevention of Food and Water Contamination Related to Environmental Factors (1993-1994)
(d) Participation in National Committees

The Director, the Senior Chemist and the Technical Manager are members of:
  • The Pest Control Products Board (PCPB)
  • The Technical Committee for evaluation of the applications for pesticides registration
  • The Technical Sub Committee for Pesticide Residues limits
The Senior Chemist is chairing the Committee for coordination of Pesticide Residues Monitoring programs and related activities.

The accredited methods of the laboratory as well as the fields of application can be found in the ESYD webpage, www.esyd.gr (Πίνακες Διαπιστεύσεων, Κατάλογος Εργαστηρίων,Γ.Χ.Κ.(Κύπρου)
