Nicosia Medical Association - Kyrenia Hippocrates: Lecture by Dr Roberto Becker (PAHO), Subject: "Mortality Data and Medical Certification of Causes of Death"

Pavlou for the lecture of the 29th of April 2004 The Ministry of Health in co-operation with the Who-Euro have organised a workshop for the causes of death certification and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems ICD-10. A special advisor, who gives coding lessons to a small number of health officers and lessons for the correct completion of causes of death to medical staff, has been invited. It was considered right that the private doctors' training needs not to be ignored. The reason for this lecture is to make an initial sensitisation for this significant subject and to begin a progamme of continuous information and training of all doctors of Cyprus in how the death certificate must be completed. There will be training in the way of registering the diagnoses to the internal patients of the hospitals and clinics, at a later stage. After the improvement of the quality of the medical certification of causes of death, we hope that gradually but shortly, the mortality statistics of Cyprus will be rendered rivalling to those of other European Countries and will be acceptable for publication by international organisations. Dr Roberto Becker, who will do the lecture, is the Local Consultant of the Pan American Health Organisation and a specialist in education at international classification systems of the World Health Organisation. He will present the subject "Mortality Data and Medical Certification of Causes of Death". He will describe the ways in which the mortality data is used and the factors that influence the statistics. In other words, he will explain what is hidden behind the data. He will also inform us for the correct way to complete the causes of death on the medical certification.
