Dr. Popi Kanari - Minister of Health


Popi Nicolaidou Kanari was born in Lefkosia and graduated from the English School. She studied Chemistry at the University of London and holds a PhD degree from the same University. She has served for 37 years at the State General Laboratory, of which the last eight in the position of Director.

During her tenure as Director she established the first accredited laboratory in the National Guard for testing gunpowder in ammunition. She served in many administrative boards, both at local and European level. She served as member of the EFSA advisory board, head of the European Network of Official Medicine Laboratories and chairwoman of the American Association of Official Analytical Chemists (European Section). She is a consultant in the fields of Food Safety, Medicine Safety and toxicology.


Ms Kanari served as the first chairwoman of the National Anti-Doping Team for doping-free sports. She became a member of the Board of Directors of the Karaiskakeio Foundation in 1999 and was elected Chairwoman in 2011, a position she holds to this day. As Chairwoman of the “Lefkosia-Lefkothea” Rotary Club in 2005, she co-ordinated 11 Rotary Clubs for the creation of the first Cord Blood Registry at the Karaiskakeio Foundation.


She is a member of the board of Directors of the Cyprus Cancer Research Institute, the European University Council and the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation – Cyprus Institute.


She is married and has two children and five grandchildren.
