Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Toxicology

The Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory (Lab.3) of the SGL is the only official laboratory in Cyprus which carries out analyses of police exhibits for the following cases:

  • drug trafficking and drug use
  • arson
  • use and possesion of explosives
  • traffic accidents
  • malicious damage
  • unnatural deaths and poisonings
  • murders
  • robberies, rapes etc

    The SGL receives samples mainly from: the Cyprus Drug Squad (YKAN), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Traffic Control Department, the Police Stations, the British Bases and the United Nations. It also receives samples from the Hospitals and the Veterinary Services.

    The aim of the Laboratory is to provide reliable analytical data in an impartial and objective way as well as expert witnessing to:

    • Facilitate the administration of Justice
    • Support the Law Enforcement Authorities towards combating crime, use and trafficking of narcotics
    • Provide assistance to the Hospitals in cases of emergencies

    For the accomplishment of these aims the Laboratory provides:

    • The means for more efficient approaches in Police investigations, by multiple utilisation of techniques and methodologies
    • Information to the public through educational programmess for drug use prevention
    • Assistance to the Hospital doctors by providing laboratory data in cases of poisoning, suicide attempts and unnatural deaths
