Obligation to label foods with mandatory indications, in the Greek language

    ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ

Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 lays down mandatory indications to be included in the labelling of prepackaged foodstuffs for consumer information. Such information is the name of the foodstuff, the name and address of the producer or importer or business operator, the list of ingredients and allergens, the net quantity, the date of minimum durability or the “use by” date, and more. Τhe mandatory indications are stated in Articles 9 and 10 of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011.

For certain categories of foods, specific laws apply that set out additional mandatory labelling indications. These are:

    Olive oil,

    Honey,

    Jam, marmalade and chestnut paste,

    Genetically modified foods,

    Chocolate and cocoa products,

    Sugars and table sweeteners,

    Foods treated with Ionising Radiation,

    Fruit juices,

    Infant formulae and follow-on formulae,

Foods intended for use in energy-restricted diets for weight reduction,

Processed cereal-based foods and baby foods for infants and young children,

Dietary foods for special medical purposes,

    Food supplements,

Foods that bear health and/or nutrition claims,

Natural Mineral Waters and Spring Waters.

The sale of fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly baked bread and generally of all non-prepackaged foods also requires certain mandatory labelling indications. However, the labelling information is less detailed than for pre-packaged foods, and depends on the food group. The minimum requirement is to list allergens contained in these foods.

National legislation of the Republic of Cyprus (The Labelling, Presentation, and Advertising of Foods (General) Regulations 2002-2010) requires that all the mandatory indications on the labelling of both pre-packaged and non-pre-packaged foods to be in the Greek language. On a voluntary basis, these mandatory indications may be given additionally also in any other language.
