EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD (EHIC)

BENEFITS

The European Health Insurance Card gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland or the United Kingdom under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country. The benefits covered include, for example, benefits provided in conjunction with chronic or existing illnesses as well as in conjunction with pregnancy and childbirth.

TREATMENT, COVERAGE & COSTS

Doctors

• With your European Health Insurance Card, you can get treatment from doctors practicing in public healthcare centres. You will be charged a small standard fee per visit.

• You can also use your European Health Insurance Card to get treatment by any doctor/medical centre offering services for the General Health System (GeSY). In this case you will need to pay the full amount and ask for reimbursement from your home member state.


Dentists

• With your European Health Insurance Card, you can get emergency treatment from dentists practicing in public healthcare centres. You will be charged a small standard fee per visit.


Hospital treatment

• You can get in-patient treatment at any public hospital free of charge.

• You can also get in-patient treatment at any private hospital offering services for GeSY. However, when you choose private hospitals, you will need to pay the full amount and ask for reimbursement from your home member state




Prescriptions

• Medicine can be obtained from Public Pharmacies situated at the Public Hospitals. You will be charged a small standard fee which cannot be reimbursed.


• Medicine can also be obtained by GeSY’s private pharmacies. However, when you choose private pharmacies, you will need to pay the full amount and ask for reimbursement from your home member state. Prescription from a GeSY doctor will be needed.


Ambulance

• Ambulance service is free if you show your European Health Insurance Card.
