SCOPE
The scope of the Laboratory is the contribution to the control and prevention of environmental pollution.
The laboratory offers supportive services to the competent Authorities which have the responsibility for the implementation of the legislation related to the Environment.
In collaboration with the competent Authorities (The Department of Inspection of the Ministry of labour, the Fisheries Department, the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural resources, the Water Development Department) the laboratory develops and implements programs for monitoring the efficiency of domestic waste treatment plants, the quality of sea water and sea sediments and the quality of air.
The control of indoor air quality is also one of the Laboratory´s activities.
ACTIVITIES
Within the framework for the implementation of the Law on Air Quality (N.77(I)/2010), the Law on Ambient air quality and Management (N.188(I)/2002) and the Laws on Water Pollution 2002 and 2005 (water framework directive 2000/60) the laboratory analyses samples of:
- Treated domestic and industrial wastes
- Soil
- Sea
- Sea sediments
- Air
The Laboratory is equipped with high technology equipment and has the required expertise for the determination of organic and inorganic parameters in the above samples which include:
Metals
BODs
COD
Suspended solids
Total phosphorus
Anions/cations
Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH´s)
Total Nitrogen
Volatile organic compounds (Benzene, Toluene, o,m,p xylene, Ethylbenzene1,2,4 Trimethyl Benzene).
Also, in collaboration with the Water Development Department, the laboratory implements monitoring programs for monitoring the efficiency of domestic waste treatment plants, assuring thus good quality treated water for reuse.
Within the framework of the implementation of the Directive 2008/102/EC regarding the environmental quality standards the laboratory will develop new methods for the determination of PAH´s in treated wastes and sediments and pesticides in treated wastes.

COLLABORATIONS
The laboratory participates in Interlaboratory proficiency testing programs organized by European and other bodies such as Aquacheck (UK), Acid Rain (WMO) IMEP (EU).
