Address on behalf of the Minister of Health. Mrs Constantlna Akkelidou.
At the Blood Donation of the Akrotiri Force officers
Monday 20 October 2003 at 11pm

Cyprus is among the very few countries in the world that have achieved full satisfaction for their populations blood needs by voluntary blood donation. This is the result of the excellent cooperation and co-ordination between the public health services and the voluntary organizations concerned, but above all, it reflects the traditional feelings of altruism and solidarity with the sick and the needy that characterize Cypriots.

This success is not measured in quantitative terms only. The laboratory checks and other safety measures, combined with voluntary blood donation, guarantee the quality and safety of blood transfusion. Because the volunteer blood donor, whose only motivation is altruism, has no reason to conceal conditions or diseases that may be transmitted by blood transfususion.
It is for this reason that the legislation that has been introduced in Cyprus for the regulation of blood donation includes provisions, that recognize and upgrade the role of voluntary organizations in blood donation.

On behalf of the Minister of Health, Mrs Constantina Akkelidou, I would like to congratulate and thank superintendent Layton and the members the SBA Akrotiri police force for organizing today's blood donation, which is an invaluable contribution to the health and welfare of the people of Cyprus and an expression of moral duty towards our fellow-man and society at large.
