The Medical Informatics Europe

The Medical Informatics Europe (MIE) Special Topic Conference has been established as a focused event in the domain of Medical Informatics by the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI). It is hosted annually in different member countries of EFMI.

The 2002 MIE-ST Conference will focus on issues relevant to Health Informatics as they are integrated in the existing Health Care Systems. The topics will be presented by leading experts mostly from the EFMI working groups.

Of special interest, during this ST Conference, will be the Workshop on Natural Language Processing in Biomedical Applications, which will attract world authorities on the topic. It is organized by the Working Group 8 of EFMI on Natural Language Understanding.

March 2002

It is a great honour for me to offer a welcome address to the participants and organizers of this conference on e-volution of information technology in the Health Care Systems
This conference is organized by European Society for Medical Informatics and the Cyprus Society of Medical Informatics under the auspices of H. E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus. This is certainly an important event to add to the calendar of conferences seminars and workshops organized in Cyprus for the benefit of the medical profession, given the absence of a medical faculty in Cyprus and the few opportunities afforded for continuous medical education. It is even more important nowadays as we are all witnessing the rapid expansion of fundamental knowledge in medicine in general and in Medical Informatics in particular.
It is an honour for Cyprus to host this conference in this time of great transition. Innovative new technologies, expanding research areas, increased multi-national and multi-professional collaborative activities all contribute to our goal of moving the community forwards. The range and depth of contributions illustrates the maturity and significance of health informatics in the maintenance and
improvement of health throughout the EU. The congress is an event to facilitate scientific content exploration, solutions and informal interworking and debate. We are particularly pleased at the growing participation of operational players from both developed and (re)emerging nations around Europe.
The synergy between academic, scientific, operational and commercial parties involved in informatics to support health provides a solid grounding for the new century.
Continuous training and upgrading in Medical Informatics is becoming essential, since not only we are observing the acceleration of the expansion of knowledge but we are also participating in great leaps forward in the level of technological achievements. Most importantly we are seeing the developments in Telemedicine and bioinformatics.
Within this new and fastly changing environment and given the goal of offering the best possible level of medical services to the public, the Ministry of Health is supporting every effort which aims at enhancing the knowledge base of medical professionals. We are fully aware of the fact that the quality of service is closely determined by the level of knowledge and the constant upgrading of skills of all the personnel working in the medical field, this course offers a unique opportunity to Cypriot medical professionals to be acquainted with the most recent developments in the fields of Medical Informatics. They will be given the chance to look at issues and problems related to information technology. During this course there will also be opportunities to look into other factors of the problem to provide a complete and integrated approach that will be of assistance to both the patients themselves but most importantly to the whole system of health care provision.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our international guest speakers and to thank them for their invaluable contribution to this workshop and hope that they will enjoy their stay in our small country. I would like also to congratulate the Organizers of this workshop on their initiative and their ongoing efforts to improve the level of knowledge and the quality of services The Ministry of Health would like to praise such efforts and to promise that the Ministry will continue supporting such efforts and would ensure that more of these are being organized.

Let me also convey to you the most sincere welcome by the President of the republic the honourable Glafkos Clerides, together with the assurance that the Government will continue to support such events.

With these few words I would like to officially declare the opening of the workshop and wish you all a beneficial and productive session.
