The Cyprus State General Laboratory (SGL) actively participated in the "Researchers Night 2016”, held on Friday, 30th September 2016, at the International Conference Centre "Filoxeneia" in Nicosia, with the activity “COME PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD! LEARN ABOUT FOOD QUALITY & SAFETY”.

The objective of the SGL was, to give visitors the opportunity, through interactive activities, to appreciate how science assures food safety, to learn about food quality & safety and the prevention of foodborne diseases, and to gain an appreciation of the scientific process.

Visitors were able to participated in simple, interactive experiments, such as:

(a) How can we determine the concentration of salt in food?

(b) What are food colorants and how can we detect them?

(d) How can we know if a food item is spoilt or contaminated with dangerous microorganisms?

The "Researchers Night" was organized by the Research Promotion Foundation (RPF), in cooperation with academic and research institutions and other institutions of the country, as part of a European Commission’s initiative that took place simultaneously in almost all European countries.

Visitors had the opportunity to enjoy a creative night dedicated to science and research, through experiments, games, contests and music.

Audiences of all ages had the opportunity to come into contact with Cypriot researchers and their work, in a festive and friendly atmosphere. At the stands of the event, researchers presented their work and informed the public about the role and importance of research in the modern world and the practical daily applications of their research results. At the same time, the public had the opportunity to engage in experiments and everyone to become a researcher for a night.

All the events took place - simultaneously - on Friday 30 September, in over 250 cities across Europe and neighbouring countries.
