Drinking water hygiene and safety is a major scope of the State General Laboratory (SGL). The water must be hygienic and clean without the presence of harmful microorganisms and chemical substances (Νόμος Ν87(Ι)/2001, Οδηγία 98/83/ΕΚ).

The quality control of drinking water is ensured through annual programmes designed in cooperation with the competent authorities of the Ministry of Health and includes, apart from the drinking water network, bottled water, natural mineral water and water supplied from vending machines and bowsers.

The SGL cooperates with the Water Development Department for the implementation of a monitoring programme for the quality of water from all water treatment and desalination plants.

In case any problems are encountered all the competent authorities (Public Health Services, Water Development Department, Water Boards, Geological Survey Department, Communities) are involved.

The results of the quality control of drinking water are announced on the website of the Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the SGL and also on the National Open Data Portal. The results alone do not indicate that the drinking water is not safe. More .....
